Francesco Forgione was born in Pietrelcina in May, the 25th 1887, by Grazio Forgione and Maria Giuseppina Di Nunzio. His childhood was quiet and his parents had an important role in determining his religious education. Since he was a child, he liked a lot the quiet games and, above all, to pray. On January the 6th, 1903, he entered the monastery in Morcone, close to Pietrelcina and, the 22nd of January 1904, he became Frate Pio.
His health in the years was always more delicate. He had strange pains in different parts of his body and they were even more painfull on the occasion of the Holy Friday.
The 20th of September 1918 he received the stigmatas, a lasting sign that he had till he died, in September, the 23rd, 1968, in San Giovanni Rotondo.
All his life was devoted to love to God and to others. Nowadays, thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come visiting his remains, that are guarded in the Church that his dedicated to Padre Pio and was projected by Renzo Piano.
